About Counselling

When is counselling useful?
There are many reasons people seek counselling or therapy.
You may be going through a distressing experience such as bereavement, relationship problems or difficulties at work. You may have a more general issue such as stress, anxiety, depression or just feeling something’s not quite right in your life.
You may have a desire to understand yourself better, or to feel more in control of your behaviour.
Being able to talk about your thoughts and feelings in a safe setting, without fear of being judged or criticised, can be a tremendous relief.

Choosing a counsellor or therapist
It's important to find a counsellor who is suitably trained and qualified, and who is right for you.
Here’s a web page which covers the subject in some detail: Selecting a Counsellor.
Don't be afraid to ask a prospective counsellor any questions that are on your mind.

What is Gestalt counselling?

The Gestalt approach:
  • is ‘holistic’: i.e. deals with the whole person: mind, body, emotions and spirit
  • starts from the premise that each of us has the necessary resources to solve the problems and difficulties life brings, but sometimes we fail to tap those resources due to fixed, inaccurate beliefs or behaviour patterns
  • concentrates on your ‘here-and-now’ experience (rather than what has been, might be or should be)
  • encourages you to accept and value yourself as you are
  • promotes greater awareness - of your thoughts and feelings, how you relate to others, and what holds you back from being fully yourself
  • helps you move towards personal integration and wholeness, effectively communicating your feelings and wants, and living a satisfying, fulfilled life.
  • focuses on increased awareness and better self-understanding, leading to greater freedom of action
